Grandma’s Spaghetti and Meatballs

Ok, Listen up, I’m going to show you a secret recipe on how to make a really mean Spaghetti and Meatballs. This is serious stuff, so if I were you, I would pay attention. This is Italian Grandmother territory here, and in honor of National Meatball Day, I decided to share this with you.

Grandma’s Spaghetti and Meatballs

Dogfish Head Red & White

Gravy (Tomato Sauce)


1 medium Onion

1/4 stick of butter

5 garlic cloves

1/2 pound ground beef

1 lbs Italian sausage

1 lamb shank

1 small tomato paste

2 large can of tomatoes

2 cans of tomato purée 30 oz

4 bay leaves

1/4 tsp All Spice

1/4 Cinnamon

1/8 Tbsp sugar

salt to taste


  1. Sauté onion and garlic in butter, add ground beef and lamb
  2. Add can of tomato paste, can of tomatoes, purée, and simmer for about 4 or more hours
  3. Put in spices
  4. Steam sausages to get rid of fat then add to sauce
  5. Add meatballs and simmer for about another hour

Grandma’s Meatballs


1 pound of chopped meat

2 eggs

2 small onions

3 cloves minced

1 Tbsp fresh basil chopped

1 Tbsp parsley chopped

4 slices of wet bread or bread crumbs

1 Tbsp of olive oil


  1. Form meatballs with ingredients except olive oil
  2. Fry in olive oil until browned
  3. Place into sauce to cook when sausage is added
